Charles E. McCallar, Sr., 87, passed away Sunday, at Azalealand Nursing Home.
He was a native of Savannah, Ga., and moved to Pooler, Ga after retirement in 1993.
Born to Herschel McCallar, Sr., and Vivian J. Dixon, he was a graduate of Savannah High School, Class of 1948, after which he joined the National Guard/Georgia Hussars for two years and was mobilized in August 1950 to Texas and New Mexico during the Korean War, discharged, returned to Savannah and was a staff accountant for a local Accounting Firm for several years.
He was a Graduate of Armstrong Junior College, now Atlantic University. In 1954 he married Joyce Roberts McCallar of White Bluff.
He then began his career at Georgia Regional Hospital, and was employed in several positions for 27 years; the last being Assistant Superintendent of Administration.
Charles played sports, including Basketball, and was known in all the softball leagues. He was a member of Ambucs, Old Timers Softball Club, and was very active in his church since 1953, St. Paul's Lutheran. He will be remembered at Black Creek Golf Club for truly enjoying his golfing years. He played in the World Softball Championship for Seniors in Alabama in 1980.
He was a member of the National Association of Mental Health Administrators.
He is survived by his wife; son, Charles E.(Chuck) McCallar, and wife Martha McCallar of Pooler, Ga; daughter, Laura Sartain and husband, Tim Sartain of Lawrenceville, Ga; grandchildren, Jared McCallar, Justin McCallar, Caitlin McCallar, all of Pooler, and Nicolle Sartain, of Athens, Ga.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 29, from 10:00-11:00a.m. followed by the memorial service at 11a.m. at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 10 W. 31st St., Savannah.
