It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles Alton Craven, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Charles passed away peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the age of 88 in Rincon, Georgia, where he resided for many years with his cherished family.
Born on Wednesday, September 9, 1936, in Jacksonville, Florida, Charles lived a life full of love, commitment, and adventure. In 1963, he and his wife, Lena Belle Craven, made a home in Savannah, Georgia, eventually settling in Effingham County in 1977, where they built a life together that would become a haven for their growing family.
Charles was a dedicated employee of Owens Corning, where he worked diligently for 39 and a half years before his well-deserved retirement. His unparalleled work ethic was only matched by his service to his country; he proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
A true outdoorsman at heart, Charles found joy in the simple pleasures of life—hunting, fishing, and camping. He was also an avid NASCAR enthusiast and participated actively in the community as a devoted member of the Coastal Cathedral Church of God.
He is survived by his loving son, Danny Lanier Craven; granddaughters, April Craven (Joseph Burnsed) and Amanda Craven; great-grandchildren, Joseph Craven, Charles A. Craven, and Peyton Sheffield, who will cherish the memories and legacy he leaves behind. Charles is also survived by his brother, Richard Downs, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and a multitude of friends.
Charles was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lena Belle Craven; his parents, Earl Lanier Downs and Mary Alice Duke Downs; his son, Roy Craven; his great-grandson, Mason Lane Craven; and his sister, Gail Downs. The family takes comfort in knowing he has been reunited with them.
A private service will honor Charles's remarkable life, and arrangements have been entrusted to Baker McCullough Funeral Home-Garden City Chapel. Though his presence will be immeasurably missed, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice, in honor of Charles’s love for community and the outdoors.
