Charles Coleman Brooks, Sr., 93, of Savannah, died Tuesday, November 14, 2017.

Charles was born January 20, 1924 in Bradenton, Florida to William Byron Brooks, Jr. and Jessie Lou Fields Brooks.  He spent most of his childhood years in Atlanta, Georgia.

He married his sweetie, Martha Ann Clift Brooks, on December 26, 1943.

While attending Boys' High in Atlanta, he was All-State in basketball and held the 100-yard dash record at 10.3 seconds. He also won the Atlanta Junior championship.  After high school, he attended Georgia Tech on a basketball and track scholarship.  As a freshman at Georgia Tech, he did play basketball but did not run track.  Upon the beginning of World War II, he joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1945.  After the end of World War II, he attended Emory University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration in 1948. While living in Atlanta, GA, the Brooks family grew with 6 children.  In 1964, he moved to Savannah, GA as owner and operator of Brooks Tire Company.  While raising 6 children and working full time, he attended John Marshall Law School.  He was in the first graduating class for the Savannah John Marshall Law School in 1973.  He then began a very successful law practice and later served the Chatham County Court System as a Recorder's Court Judge Pro-Tem.  Mr. Brooks served on the Chatham County Commission as District 1 representative from 1981 to 1985 and as commission chairman from 1985 to 1989.  In 1993, Mr. Brooks attended University of Cambridge in England and was awarded a Certificate of Completion from the School of History.

Mr. Brooks was quite an athlete throughout his life.  In addition to playing basketball for Georgia Tech, he played tennis and was ranked first in the State of Georgia Senior standings.  Later in life, in his seventies, he took up golf and became a great golfer.  On October 5, 2005 at Bacon Park Golf Course, he shot 71.  He was 81 years old.  The Charles C. Brooks Sports Complex located on Wilmington Island was named for Mr. Brooks.

He was a long-time member of Bull Street Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and as a Sunday School teacher.

The family is so very thankful for the wonderful care given to Mr. Brooks by the staff at Savannah Square Senior Living Facility, Coastal Home Care, and Hospice Savannah.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, William Byron Brooks, III.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Martha Clift Brooks and their children, Charlie Brooks, Jr. (Elizabeth), Sally Lacey (Sammy), Allen Brooks (Joni), all from Atlanta, GA, Lucy Hazlip (Willie) from Savannah, GA, Frank Brooks, from Atlanta, GA, Carolyn Speir (Larry), from Pooler, GA.  He is also survived and will be greatly missed by his 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

The family will gather at the funeral home on Friday, November 17, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.; funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Larry Speir officiating.  Burial will follow at Greenwich Cemetery.
