Carl Harold “Hal” Taylor passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 6, 2022 at his home in Savannah, GA. He was 88 years old. Hal was a lifelong resident of Savannah, born to Dorothy Sack Taylor and James Harold Taylor on August 14, 1934. He is survived by his three children Deborah Taylor Houchens (husband John) of Savannah, John Harold Taylor (wife Karen) of Macon, GA, and Teri Taylor French-Mirtschink of Dallas, GA; two sisters Gwen Avery of Marietta, GA and LaDonna Lott of Milledgeville, GA. “Papa Taylor” as he was known by family had nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Jeanne Cawthon Taylor who passed away December 7, 1976. Hal never loved anyone more than he loved her.
For almost all of his working life Hal was a longshoreman, eventually earning the nickname “pencil head” from his ILA #1475 co-workers because he could always be found with a pencil behind his ear. When not working he raised beagles, hunted and fished, and coached little league baseball at Bacon Park. He was clear minded till the end and could tell you the name of every player he coached, their position… and whether or not they were any good. For years he followed Nascar and attended races from Pocono to Talladega and beyond. Cale Yarborough was the man. He never passed up a sale on clothes – and never threw any of them away. Grandkids loved raiding his closets on visits to the house to steal vintage t-shirts and old jackets. He moved to Burnside Island in 1978 and was a member of the SOB club. Its members claim it stands for “Sons of Burnside”. Others believe it alludes to something else.
Papa Taylor, to use his own words, was a “sport.” He will be missed.
A memorial service for Mr. Taylor will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023 at a location to be determined in Savannah.
