Carl L. Hendricks, age 94, of Savannah passed away Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at his residence.
Born in Bulloch County on March 18, 1929, to Charles Roundtree Hendricks and Ida Lena Lanier Hendricks. He moved to Savannah as an infant. He attended Barnard Elementary, Chatham Junior High, and night school at Commercial High School under the G.I. Bill.
He was a life member of the 117th Aircraft Control & Warning Flight and retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1979. He was active in the Savannah Fire Department, and he was the best friend a fire engine ever had. It was always said that throughout the fire service if there was a problem with a fire engine then Carl was the man to call. He retired from the Fire Department in 1990.
He was a life member of the Alee Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite, and Ancient Landmark 231. He was a past president of the Alee Shrine Oriental Band. He was a life member of the Tybee Lite Shrine Club as well as a life member of the American Legion Post 135. He was also a Tennessee Squire. He was an active member of the Higher Ground Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
He umpired Little League, Pony League, High School, American Legion Baseball, and Softball leagues for over 30 years. He enjoyed fishing and traveling, visiting all 50 states, Europe, Russia behind the Iron Curtain, the Eastern and Western Caribbean, Mexico, Bermuda, Australia, New Zealand, and Panama.
He thought the world of his family. Everyone knew him as “Granddaddy”. He is survived by his wife, Sequel Viola Hendricks, whom he was married to for over 73 years, as well as his two sons: Carl L. Hendricks II, Garry L. Hendricks, and wife Cindy; two grandchildren: Courtland L. Hendricks and wife Michelle, and Brittany Hendricks and her fiancé Eric Velazquez; two great-grandchildren: Olivia and Connor Hendricks. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as many relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m., with funeral service to follow on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406).
