Captain Burney Giles

Anderson Burney Giles, Jr. was born on January 9, 1927 and very proud to have been born in a house on Greene Square and raised in the Old Fort Section of Savannah. He died at home on January 20, 2019 under the care of Hospice Savannah surrounded by his family.
In his early years, Anderson (Andy) was a student of the 1945 Class of the Old Benedictine Military School. He served in the United States Navy Seabees in World War II.
He joined the original Chatham County Police Department in 1957 and retired after 28 years on February 1985 as Captain of Patrol. During his police career, he attended and graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia in their very first graduating class. There is a brass plaque in the FBI Academy's lobby where Anderson's name is inscribed with the other names of his graduated classmates. Among his other police accomplishments, he was instrumental in initiating the Motorcycle Patrol Unit, the Chatham County Animal Control and the Chatham County Boat Patrol. At Captain Andy's retirement, he was in charge of all uniformed Chatham County Police Officers. He was always approachable to his fellow police officers. Many considered him as a mentor. Andy was known for his calmness he demonstrated when everyone else was excited and overwhelmed. He was a true friend.
Anderson was raised as a Roman Catholic and served as an Altar Boy at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. In 1979, he joined St. Thomas Episcopal Church at Isle of Hope. He has been a faithful and loyal member for 40 years. While there, he was very active and participated in the Senior Friendship Day and the St. Thomas Thrift Store. He served on the Vestry and was elected Junior Warden. He very much loved his church family.
Andy was predeceased by his parents, Annie McGuire Giles and Anderson Burney Giles, Sr., his daughter, Sandra Giles Kelly and sister, Edna Steves Kenny.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carol Dutton Giles; daughter, Patricia Giles Hancock (Ben) of Alabama; siblings, Margaret Giles Grotto of Savannah and William Giles (Nancy) of Charlotte, NC; stepsons, Brian J. Smith (Patsi) and Kevin F. Smith (Christann) both of Savannah; grandsons, Timothy Kelly (Christi) of Savannah and Joseph Kelly of Virginia, Christopher Squires of Oklahoma, Michael Squires of Alabama and granddaughter, Tina Hancock of Alabama; step-grandsons, L. Kent Eastman III (Claire) of Manhattan, NY, J. Seth Eastman, Sr. (Leslie) of Bluffton, SC. Also survived by 6 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at Isle of Hope on Saturday, January 26th, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the church Parish Hall.
