Bonnie Margaret Wells Harris, born in Savannah, Georgia, to O.K. and Helen M. Wells on Oct. 12, 1944, died at Savannah Hospice House on May 22, 2023, after a short illness.
Her life demonstrated her caring and stability. She was married to Lewis John Harris Sr. from 1965 until his death in 2020. Upon graduating from Savannah High School, she attended Memorial Hospital’s nursing school, earning her R.N. certification. Bonnie worked in Memorial’s pediatric unit for the next 30 years, where she cared for countless children and their families.
Her family was the center of her life. Growing up, she helped look after her two younger sisters and, later in life, cared for her aging parents until their deaths. She was a loving mother to her sons, Lewis John (Chip) Harris Jr. (Suzette) of Alpharetta, Georgia, and James Kirby Harris (Paula) of Savannah, as well as a devoted grandmother to Stephanie, Emily, David, James, Sarah and Paige. Her sisters, Diane Dodson of Manhattan, Kansas, and Sally Daniel of Virginia Beach, Virginia, also survive her.
Bonnie was known for her great sense of humor and lifelong commitment to “doing the right thing.” She was the founder of the Wilshire Area Neighborhood Association and led it from 2013-2016, working on the community garden effort for Wilshire Estates in 2014. She volunteered with the Savannah Humane Society for several years.
A celebration of life service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Washington Ave., Savannah, at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24. In lieu of flowers, donations to Savannah Hospice or Coastal Georgia Pet Rescue, would be gratefully received.
