Billy Dowland Grist, of Savannah, son of the late Everett Wayland Grist and Doris Dowland Grist, passed away peacefully at his home after a long illness on July 5th, 2024.
He was the beloved husband of Stephanie Morgan Grist for 25 years. He was a devoted father to Allyson Grist Gatlin (Hugh). He was a loving grandfather to Ansley Korzik (Matthew), Caroline Brown, and Caleb Brown and a great-grandfather to Maverick Korzik. Billy was the brother to his late sister Sandra Quick (Robert) and was an uncle to Carrie Campbell (Scott), Carl Quick (Gayle), Karen Floyd (Ron), Melissa Jenkins (Cam), Michael Lanier and a great uncle to his nieces and nephews and a best friend to his cat Fred.
Billy was a graduate of Savannah High School and served in the U.S. Air Force National Guard. Following his military service, Billy joined the Local Pipefitters Union and was also a member of the Alee Shrine and the Frank Baker Masonic Lodge.
Billy spent many years in the construction industry before going into the equipment rental business. He was associated with Badger Rental and then went on to start Grist Equipment Rental and Tri State Services.
There was nothing that Billy enjoyed more than spending time with friends and family. Back in the day he was an avid fresh-water fisherman, and he enjoyed many hours exploring the banks of the Ogeechee River and teaching his daughter the “Billy Grist” way of fishing. He loved fast cars and motorcycles.
Billy never met a stranger and was always happy to offer anyone a lending hand. Billy was the type of man that everyone could depend on. He worked hard in life and always made sure that his family and friends were taken care of.
Billy’s life gave us all memories too beautiful to forget so please join us for a “Celebration of Life” at the Wilmington Island Methodist Church on July 21st at 1:00 pm. Paster Doug Walker to officiate. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local pet rescue in Billy’s honor.
