Billie Kathryn Verrett, 93, of Garden City passed away peacefully at the Hospice of the Golden Isles on January 25th after a brief illness. She was preceded on that journey by her husband of fifty seven years, C.A. Tony Verrett; Sisters Carolyn Cain, and Ann Clark. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Lauran Moreno, ( Steve). Lisa Hitt, ( Bill ) Phillip Clark, Donna Groves ( Roger) , Susan Gunnell and devoted lifelong friend James Getty. Also surviving are a host of second and third generation nieces and nephews, and several special friends.
She was born in Waycross to William ( Bill ) and Laura Capps on February 28, 1925. At the age of 25 she enlisted the Women's Army Corps to become a nurse. The war ended shortly after, and the program was discontinued. She migrated to Savannah to finish her nursing degree at the Candler school of Nursing. After her pinning she worked in the operating room of the old Oglethorpe Hospital until its closure in the early 1970's. After a brief stint of working in a private practice she went to work for the Chatham County Board of education as a school nurse at Windsor Forest until her retirement. She enjoyed cooking special Cajun dishes, having her hops and barley, and spending time at "the river" (Planting Hammock off of Midway) and travelling, with husband Tony, friends and family.
Visitation will be Monday beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Port Wentworth, with a celebration mass following at 11:00. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery. Pall bearers will be James Getty, and great nephews Stephen Moreno IV, Justin Womack, Alex Hitt, Allen Tullos, and Chris Crowder, In Lieu of flowers donations may be given to The Hospice of the Golden Isles
