Betty Sanders Tomat

Betty Louise Sanders Tomat, 91, of Savannah, died Friday, Dec 4, 2015 at Azalealand Convalescent Center.
She was born in Savannah, Ga., on Nov. 18, 1924, and went home to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry William Sanders, Sr., and Louise Stephens Sanders; her husband, William Franklin Tomat, who passed away June 18, 2009, after 59 years of marriage. and her brother, Harry William Sanders, Jr., United States Marine Corp Reserve, and a member of Savannah Dog Company, who was killed March 2, 1951 in Korea. She was also preceded in death by her son in law, Dr. Melvin Eugene Franks.
Betty was a graduate of Savannah High School, Class of 1942, and was a former employee of the of the Central of Georgia Railway for many years in the Auditing Department, and after it closed, she was employed at Sears, Roebuck Co for almost 20 years in the Auditing Department.
Growing up, Betty was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, when it was located on Park Ave and Jefferson, and when the church moved to the Southside of Savannah, she then affiliated with Robert McIntire United Methodist Church, where she was a member for over 50 years and was very active there. She served as pianist for many years, until the Church closed in 2008., and most of all Betty was a Christian, and a member of beautiful Trinity United Methodist Church on Telfair Square, Savannah, Ga. Betty also attended the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension.
She enjoyed her membership in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, 17th Century Colonial Dames of America, and Daughter of the American Revolution.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Susan Tomat Franks Protzman (Dan Protzman) of Statesboro, Ga; and a son, William "Willie" Franklin Tomat, Jr., of Savannah, Ga; 2 granddaughters, Suzanne Marie Franks Bishop (Jonathan), and Mary Jacqueline Franks
both of Statesboro, Ga.
Visitation: 12:00 p.m. - 1 p.m. at Fairhaven Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel.
Funeral Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Hubert C. Baker Chapel, with Rev. Enoch Hendry and Rev. Carl Yost, officiating.
Interment will follow in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
