Betty Brannen Smith passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Hospice Savannah, surrounded by her family. She was born on October 22, 1931 in Emanuel County, Ga. to Luther and Etta Canady. She lived in Swainsboro Georgia until she finished her education, and then moved to Savannah in 1948. She has lived in Savannah ever since.
In 1949, she married Lemuel Oscar Brannen, Sr. Together, they raised three children. She was widowed in 1979. Four years later, she married Jesse Causey Smith, and they shared many happy years together.
After rearing her children, she returned to work, spending most of her work years at the Chatham County Voter Registration Office. After starting there in 1971, she was appointed Chief Deputy Registrar in 1981, and retired in that position in 1993. Some of her favorite moments were taking her children to the beach during many summer days, though she dreaded crossing the old Bull River Bridge. She volunteered heavily at her children's schools. She was a passionate Christian and served in many capacities as a member of Bull Street Baptist Church over her 60 years of membership.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lemuel Oscar Brannen, Sr., and her husband Jesse Causey Smith; and sister Margaret Canady Scott; brother, Luther "Pete" Canady. She is survived by her three children, Deborah Brannen Cummings (Mike), Oscar Brannen, Jr (Mary Jo), and Terri Brannen Slater (Dennis), and sister June Canady Neel of Houston, TX. She was an involved Grandmother with her 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She was a special light to the great-grands in her final years.
Visitation: will be from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2018 at the Baker McCullough Funeral Services, Hodgson Memorial Chapel , with Funeral Services in the Hubert C. Baker Chapel at 11 a.m. Monday, conducted by Rev. Earnie Pirkle. The private interment will be at the Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Nelson Sunday School Class from Bull Street Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances should be sent to Youth Ministry at Bull Street Baptist Church
