Ben Mayes, age 90, of Savannah, died Thursday, March 13, 2025 at his residence after a brief illness under the care of Hospice Savannah. Ben was born on November 27, 1934 in Camak, Georgia to James Edward Mayes and Dorothy Shelton Mayes. He lived in Savannah for seventy years, he was a 1952 graduate of Warren County High School and a 1957 graduate of University of Georgia with a Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy. Ben went on to serve his country by joining the United States Army and later worked as a pharmacist with Eckerds Drug Store for many years before retiring from Memorial University Medical Center in 2000. Ben was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church and in his spare time he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Ben was a man who believed in standing by your word and doing the right thing. He was a loving and caring father and grandfather. He is preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, Laura Dees Mayes; a son, Michael Mayes; his parents and a sister, Jackie Cannon.
His family includes his son, Edward Mayes and wife Ana of Spartanburg, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Daniel Mayes and his wife Lindsey, Steven Mayes and Victoria Kessler and her husband Jacob; one great-grandson, Thomas Mayes; two sisters, Nell Scott and her husband James of Savannah and Lucy Sutlive of Flowery Branch, Georgia; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at St. George's Episcopal Church beginning at 12:00 noon until just prior to the service. The celebration of life service will follow at 1:00 p.m., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
