Ben H. Mclendon

Ben Hill McLendon, 93, of Savannah, GA went to be with the Lord June 5, 2018. He was born June 6, 1924 in Swainsboro, GA to the late Fred and Vesta McLendon. He was preceded in death by his sister, Johnny Fred Hardin Groover and brothers Dan and Ivan McLendon, all of Savannah. He is survived by his loving wife Maxine of almost 50 years, his devoted daughter Marcy, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Ben joined the US Merchant Marines at a young age to sail the seas and explore the world. He served his country as a Merchant Mariner during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His ship was off the shores of Normandy on D-Day, on his 20th birthday. He survived being torpedoed on two occasions. He was severely wounded during one of the attacks and spent four days at sea in a life boat. He was awarded the Merchant Marine equivalent of a Purple Heart for his efforts at rowing the lifeboat while wounded.

In the early 70's, Ben left the ocean faring ships to work on tugboats and retired from the Seafarers International Union in the mid- 80's. Ben was a long-time member of Radiant Life Assembly of God and spent many years working with boys in Royal Rangers. He loved going on Powwow campouts with the Royal Rangers and was a member of the elite Frontiersman Camping Fellowship (FCF), where he was given the name Patriarch. He will be remembered and missed by his family and many friends.

Visitation will be Friday June 8, 2018 from 10 am to 11:30 am with the Funeral Service starting at 11:30 am at Baker McCullough Funeral Home- Hubert C. Baker Chapel.
