Aver Allen Thompson, Jr., age 61, of Garden City, passed away suddenly at home on January 13, 2025.
Born November 14, 1963, in Savannah, Aver was a proud native of the area and graduated from Robert W. Groves High School. He later attended several classes at Savannah Vo-Tech. Aver was a lifelong member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he found strength and community.
Aver’s passion for service was evident in his 33 years as a dedicated volunteer firefighter with the Garden City Fire Department. Outside of his work in the community, Aver found great joy in his love for sports—whether cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs or Atlanta Braves, or watching NASCAR races on weekends. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his enthusiasm for hunting and fishing, often taking his older nephews out to teach them the ways of the woods and water. Aver was also an avid bowler and fitness enthusiast, faithfully hitting the gym and using his stepper exercise equipment in his later years.
Aver’s selflessness extended beyond his hobbies. He gave his time generously by volunteering three days a week at the Old Savannah City Mission, where his kindness and openness meant that he never met a stranger. His methods of communication, which ensured his family was always aware of the social landscape, were unparalleled by anyone else.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn D. Thompson. He is survived by his father, Aver "Allen" Thompson, Sr.; sisters Fran Powell (Derik) and Bonnie Johnson; his aunts, Jeanelle Strickland, Linda Wallace, and Virlie Wilson; uncle Bill Wilson; nieces Megan Jackson (Matt), Grace Horne; nephews Christopher Powell (Ashley), Matthew Powell (Jenny), Garrett Powell, Jeremiah Johnson; great-nieces Lindsey Powell, Savannah Powell; great-nephews Landen Powell, Carter Powell, Barrett Jackson, Jedediah Johnson, Baker Jackson, Benjamin Johnson, Beckett Jackson; and several cousins.
Aver will be deeply missed by everyone and will always be cherished with love.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 41 Main St., Garden City, GA 31408.
