Arthur Thomas "Tommy" Smith, Jr., 76, lifelong resident of Savannah, Georgia, passed away on April 29th at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was a 1964 graduate of Benedictine Military School and became a skilled journeyman while working at Metalcrafts, where he worked for 18 years. During this time, he was an instructor for Sheet Metal Local 26 in the evenings where he taught and inspired a generation to pursue excellence in their work. Tommy was creative and loved that aspect of his craft as much as he enjoyed working with the friends he made throughout his career. Tommy retired as a Field Superintendent from The Industrial Company (TIC) after 19 years.
Tommy was a master craftsman with impeccable skills whether fabricating metal projects or using his creativity in his hobby of woodworking. He was kind and giving, creating beautiful things for many people while taking little in life for himself. Tommy accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 19 and set a Christ-like example through his actions. He found joy in his family, friends, and creating gifts for others. He loved to laugh and wished happiness for all.
Tommy battled Parkinson's disease for over 18 years with grace, strength, and courage. His mottos in life were "Never give up!" and "Keep on keeping on" while his prayer was "Lord, don't let me stumble" and he demonstrated his fighting spirit with tenacity and determination even in his last days.
Tommy leaves behind his cherished wife of 58 years, Cecelia Harrison Smith. He was the much-loved father of Thomas Barry Smith (Tina) and Kelly Smith Lammons, and adored grandfather of four grandsons, Justin (Maria), Dylan, and Evan Smith and Seth Lammons. He is also survived by his sister, Lynn Smith Johnson (David) and niece, Sarah Paulk (Charles) and their children. He was the son of the late Arthur Thomas Smith, Sr. and Doris Lynn Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive Savannah, GA 31406). Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
