Arthur E. Marble, 83, died peacefully of cancer on December 16, 2020, at Hospice Savannah.
Art was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on December 9, 1937 to Dorothy and Arthur Marble.
He grew up in Ohio, in Cuyahoga Falls, outside Cleveland. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1961 with a degree in Physics. He had a long and successful career in the aerospace business, working for Goodyear Aerospace, GE Aerospace and eventually retiring from Lockheed Martin. His grandkids like to tell their friends that their grandpa was a real “rocket scientist.”
Art was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joyce Finn Marble, and daughters Ann Goodgame and Carol Marble. Also by his 9 grandchildren – Jessica Marble Brown, Eric Marble, Julie Marble, David Goodgame, Kristen Goodgame, Shannon Goodgame, Ciara Marble, Connor Marble, and Jack Yoh. He is also survived by his three great-grandchildren – Isabella Brown, Sophia Brown and Julian Champaign. Art is predeceased by his two sons, Robert Marble and Jeffrey Marble. His sister, Patricia Jones, resides in New Bern, NC.
Other than his family, Art’s two great loves were science and music. After retiring and moving to Savannah, he enrolled as a music major at Armstrong State University and sang in their chorus for three years. He sang with Savannah’s Thirteenth Colony Sound, a barbershop chorus, for almost 20 years. As part of his chorus and barbershop quartet, Fully Invested, he sang around the Savannah area for charitable events for many years. Art directed Joyce’s women’s chorus, Serendipity, for over 7 years. Serendipity sings at retirement homes and special occasions throughout the Savannah area. He also sang with the Skidaway island United Methodist Church choir for about 5 years.
Art tutored math and science at Bethesda Academy for 17 years. Karleen Brown, Vice Principal of Bethesda Academy, became a good friend and offered some words upon his passing. “Mr. Art Marble served as a long time and dedicated volunteer math tutor at Bethesda Academy from 2003 -2020. During that time he assisted with the transformation of a number of young men and their journey off to college. He was also a proud member of a singing quartet group of Savannah and sang at the commencement ceremony for the first graduating class of Bethesda Academy. He incorporated a mixture of his bubbly personality and strong knowledge of mathematics when he met with the young men. He was also instrumental in organizing field trips for students to local businesses and became an honorary staff member of the Academy. His genuine love for students and the time he shared will always be remembered.” Art was featured in The South Magazine in July of 2009 as a “Champion of Children” for his work at Bethesda.
Another one of Art’s passions was cooking, for which Joyce will be forever grateful. His idea of a good time was to go on a cruise and take cooking lessons. He loved the water. He was a sailor in his younger days. He joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary when he moved to Savannah.
Art will be missed a great deal by his family and his many friends. He touched a lot of people’s lives in a very positive way.
Baker McCullough Funeral Home Hubert C. Baker Chapel is assisting the family with a private memorial service.
