Anna Gounaris passed away at home January 24, 2021.
She was born September 26,1929 in Cephani, Greece to the late Victoria Foka and Nicholas G. Gounaris. She was a graduate of Pape School in Savannah and earned a BS from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta.
Anna’s career began in the corporate world where she served for 30 years as a Chemist for Hunt-Wesson, Inc. in Savannah. After retirement, she began a second career in quality control at Heritage Organic Farm.
She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church and participated in many church related activities. She was a member of the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society and many Savannahians knew and remembered her for her role as a volunteer at the annual Greek Festival. She also served in the church bookstore on Sundays.
Anna was willing to help wherever help was needed. She even volunteered to serve one year as guild president for the Royce Reading Center.
She is survived by cousins George Gounares and Ourania Ream; and her godson, Vasile Faklis. She was also loved and cherished by many, especially her adopted family; the late Linton Grady Lanier, Jr., Shirley Daughtry, and Pat Doyle. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held January 29, 2021 at 1:30 PM at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church with burial to follow in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church 14 W. Anderson Street Savannah, GA 31401.
