Allen Q. Poppell, Jr., age 80, moved to his heavenly home on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Allen was born on September 19, 1942, in Savannah, the son of the late Hallie “Sweetheart” and Rev. Allen “Pop” Poppell, Sr. He was a graduate of Jenkins High School and continued his education at Clemson University studying architecture.
Allen served and supported many churches, missions, and organizations. Among those were the United States Coast Guard; Cresthill Baptist Church (youth leader); Windsor Forest Baptist Church (Deacon and choir); Evangelical Bible Fellowship (church planter and Elder); Compassion Christian Church – East Campus; the Habersham YMCA; and the Butterfly Ballroom.
Allen and his four brothers owned Poppell Brothers where they served the Low Country’s flooring needs for nearly 60 years. In addition to hard work, he enjoyed fishing, playing tennis and pickleball, going to the gym, ballroom dancing and his grandchildren.
Allen Poppell was preceded in death by his brother, David Poppell, Sr; sister-in-law, Joan Poppell; and grandson, Jake. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Nancy Poppell; daughter, Janice Roberts (John, Jr.); son, Chris Poppell (Sarah); brothers, Johnny Poppell (Paula) and Gene Poppell, Sr.; sister-in-law, Carolyn Poppell; grandchildren, Matthew, JD (Heidi), Hart, Krista, Cierra, and Anslee; great grandchildren, Ivory and Oaklyn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends whom he loved unconditionally.
The family will be receiving friends from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at Compassion Christian Church, East Campus, 9150 Old Montgomery Road, Savannah, GA 31406.
